The writing has all been submitted by prisoners who are in our book program. Most all of the work was typed by students as part of their prisoner project
You have a multiple assignment this week – some research, some reading and watching a video that can be found on line . I think the material and explanation is clear. How did the press characterize Tookie? I want you to know who Tookie aka Raymond Williams was and how he came to death row. I want you to see what famous people said about him at his funeral.
I want you to read and assess the article about Tookie and Black Nationalism – particularly in light of the connection between Lynching and the death penalty. I want you to include your opinion but the material needs to be addressed first.
I think you will have strong feelings about all of this and i am prepared!! The Death of Tookie Williams was the reason this class began. j

I am unable to send or post the list- it doesnt fit the requirements of the school web; I cannot attach anything to an email if i send it from the JC web. the pages are too long to fit on the blog. SO, i have asked for help.

IF you want to send a book to a prisoner now is the time to decide what and how you want to proceed. send me a personal email with books for prisoners in the subject heading and your full name pleez when you sign your request.
i will start assigning tonite i guess or whenever the first person sends something in. you can tell me in the email if you want to send the book or have me do it. what sort of book and how much you want to put toward this project.
This is ten percent of your grade BUT you are not buying me or the grade. you are doing something for someone that you do not know who needs what you can do.
i got an email from rafael vasquez (who introduced Lt Crittendon) and he said that he is within ten names of being done with the spread sheet.
It is 28 pages long- that means that there are an all time high number of requests. We will fill those that have not gotten their book from last semester first. Sometimes the prison does not release the book and it is returned. Sometimes people submit for a book and do not follow through etc.
Here is what you need to think about: How much can i honestly afford to put toward this project? think about what a book costs and then add four dollars for postage.
Think about what sort of book you would like to send- novel legal help etc.
think about how you want to send the book. Either it must go thru amazon.com (prison regs) OR I can order the book for you thru modern times a local SF bookseller who is pro books for prisoners
OR i can order it for you thru amazon with our bank account so that you do not reveal your home address – when you buy thru amazon with a credit card your home address is listed as sender.
so: what can i afford (we are not buying indulgences here. Some folks only have ten dollars. ) what sort of book
Others of you may be interested in xeroxing books which I get thru interlibrary loan because they are not available in paper back or they are out of print.
some may be interested in typing for the prisonerwriting website- prisoner stories and poems and articles. this is done in microsoft word and a copy is sent to me via email and one is for the prisoner as well.
before you turn anything in PLEEZ make certain that you have read and comprehend the import of the material on lynching.
I am interested in YOU generating questions about the implications of the book.
As a matter of practice remember that you are due three pages which means 750 words this week same as last week. Most of you did not fulfill the obligation last week- in fact students wrote in with wats that all about when they read the shorties.

I take this to mean that his guilt is not questioned but after they decide on guilt there is another sentencing hearing. At this time the judge and jury would consider mitigating factors.
